Fact vs Fiction

The definition of Fiction, as per Google search is:

Capture

So this means, you sometimes have to suspend disbelief to read a story…it’s called fiction for a reason, because the author, made up this story, it came from their imagination.  If it were fact, it would be a biography (even then, read it with a grain of salt), an auto-biography, or they would clearly state it was non-fiction.

The Northwood Lodge

My book The Northwood Lodge  (yes, I know it should be Northwoods, but I didn’t name it, my grandparents did) is the only piece of literature that I have written that is non-fiction…this means, it’s not made up.

My other works are clearly made up…or as they call it in layman’s terms, fiction.  I find it amusing when someone states they are upset because I made up a town, a place, or hey, the people aren’t real…um, hello?  Again, it’s called fiction for a reason.

Seriously, if they were fact, my erotica alone would make me the biggest s&*t there is and I am clearly not that.  At the time I wrote it, it is what I felt like writing and that’s what we authors do, we write what we feel like, make it up as it goes, sometimes some of us outline it and plan it out, but ultimately, it’s from our imaginations.

As a child, I had an active imagination.  I grew up without anyone around because we lived far out in the country.  My nearest neighbor was about a half a mile or so away.  My siblings were older and didn’t want to play with their little sister.  So I escaped to books and my imagination.  I have to tell you, that imagination never went away.  I can still clearly see the wild Indians, the Little House on the Prairie, and such things.  I think that is why I decided to write a prequel to my book Vetted while I’m also writing Vetted Further, the sequel to these amazing people.

Keep in mind, these books are not based on any REAL people, but real characters in my head.  They are also works in progress and subject to change (including the covers, see the watermarks still?)…but, it’s a nice western series for those who loved Vetted and it’s wonderful characters.

It was odd doing the research for Cavalcade and Pioneering, realizing that that this was 170 years ago!  Holy moly!  However, I hope when you read it, you will realize the beginning of this amazing pioneer family down through the years with Cavalcade and with it’s sequel Pioneering, how the family settled in 1800’s Oregon on the very same ranch that I featured in Vetted and Vetted Further.  I loved doing the research to include real, non-fiction facts in with my fiction works as well as including tidbits for the future stories.  Using real historical facts, makes it seem real, but again, it’s fiction.

Keep in mind, fiction means I made it up, non-fiction means I didn’t…

Survivors ~ NEW

I am pleased to FINALLY announce my latest release SURVIVORS!G.jpg

For some, the world would end with the dropping of the bombs.  For others, a select few, it would present an opportunity to show their true mettle.  Those who will take on the challenge to live without, make do, and subsist on, are the survivors.

Jodi was one of the few.  She knew what was coming.  She read the signs, and she had friends in low places who kept her informed.  She bought a cabin in the middle of nowhere, fixed it up, and warned her closest friends and family that the time would come to abandon the big cities, to hide and seclude yourself for the safety of your family and everyone closest to you.

Krista was her partner, her best friend, and her wife at a time when states didn’t recognize same-sex marriage.  Krista coped with her mate’s compulsions by recognizing that indulging her was the best way to maintain a harmonious union.  After all, they could afford it.  Little did she realize that Jodi was destined to be the savior of them all.

Finding that things were much worse than everyone had speculated didn’t surprise Jodi.  But it would forever alter her family’s world view and transform them into something they hadn’t realized they were destined to become…SURVIVORS!

Available directly from my website as well as with all the links so you can get your copy.

I permanently borrowed a book

The year was somewhere about 1980-1981 or 1982…I don’t exactly recall.  It was assigned reading for grumpy Mr. Crawford’s English class, but it made such an impression on me, I kept the book.

20171021_200227 20171022_204414

They stamped it Sept 9, 1974 so you can imagine how old this book really is.  It takes place in the 50’s or 60’s…I don’t completely remember.  However, I do remember the premise and it stayed with me all these years.  What if someone dropped the bombs, and how would you survive?

In 2011 I started out writing exactly a scenario like that, not copying Pat Frank’s Alas Babylon version at all, but my own story that this one definitely influenced.  I wrote a bit, and then I put it aside with all my other half-finished (even quarter-finished) novels.  I’ve picked it up again, feeling the same emotions that cross me every time I think of this scenario.  It is emotional to think what would happen if our politicians allowed ‘the button’ to be pushed.

I picked up the book after I finished my own, to refresh my feelings on both and wow, haven’t we learned anything since the Cuban Missile Crisis?  I mean really, same old politicians and stupidity that were around 40-50 years ago?

My book deals with one tiny section of the world and the characters that inhabit it, that survive after the bombs have fallen.  This family, how they survived, what they do, the morality of it all, and how they cope, is the centerpiece of this story.  I hope this never happens, never comes true.

Here is the synopsis for my upcoming book:

For some, the world would end with the dropping of the bombs.  For others, a select few, it would present an opportunity to show their true mettle.  Those who will take on the challenge to live without, make do, and subsist on, are the survivors.

Jodi was one of the few.  She knew what was coming.  She read the signs, and she had friends in low places who kept her informed.  She bought a cabin in the middle of nowhere, fixed it up, and warned her closest friends and family that the time will come to abandon the big cities, to hide and seclude yourself for the safety of your family and everyone closest to you.

Finding that things were much worse than everyone had speculated didn’t surprise Jodi.  But it forever altered their world view and transformed them into something they didn’t realize they were destined to become…SURVIVORS!

I hope to release it by the end of March, perhaps the beginning of April.  Thank you for reading!

Malice Masterpieces 3, 2nd edition

Malice Masterpieces 3 Books Eleven through Fifteen

I am pleased to announce that the newly edited (and sometimes updated) Malice Masterpieces 3 is done!  This includes books eleven through fifteen.  Each of those novellas are also updated and I’ve even released paperbacks for those who collect them.  Personally, I love the smell of a paperback over an e-book, but hey, that’s just me!

Click on the picture to be taken to my website so you can order your own e-book, in the various formats, or a paperback.  I can even sign the paperback and send it out to you!  There are actually two sizes of paperbacks available for your reading pleasure, both 6×9 which is a standard paperback and then the pocket paperback which is 4.25×7.  Why two sized paperbacks?  A 6×9″ paperback is the standard, but remember those ones at the checkout that fit comfortably in your pocket?  Those were sized 4.25×7″ and that’s why I made two sizes.  They are priced the same, and have the same content.

I’m also thrilled to announce that these are the LAST of the Malice books that needed to be re-released as all of them have now been edited.

Yes, I AM working on Malice #23 and here is a sneak peak at the cover:

Contest! Name that book!

CONTEST for SCIENCE FICTION NOVEL:

I have a confession…I am a secret Trekkie.  No, I don’t go around wearing pointy ears or talking Klingon.  No, I have never been to any of the comic-con’s or conventions where you dress up as your favorite character(s).  No, I am not a furry either (gross).  I have, however, been a fan since the 1970’s of the original Star Trek show, with all of its overly dramatic, overly acted, kitschy kind of ambiance.  I can’t tell you how thrilled I was to see The Star Trek Movie come out back on December 6, 1979.  It was one of the few things my father and I had in common that we could share, our love of Star Trek, and later our love of Star Wars.  Okay, okay, I know there are those who think you shouldn’t mix the two and I’ve committed heresy by mentioning them in the same sentence, however, they all have their good points.

I am also a cinephilia, before you all get excited about that word, it means: A person with a passionate interest in cinema is called a cinephile, cinemaphile, or, informally, a moviebuff.  I do collect movies and have the complete, original, tv series on VHS.  I also collect other movies, including GalaxyQuest, Terminator, ET (of COURSE!), The Martian, The Arrival, The Abyss, Signs, and a host of other quaint and not-so-well-known science fiction movies.  I collect a lot of other movies as well, I love romance (no surprise there), but westerns (and I mean REAL ones with John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Jimmy Stewart, Maureen O’Hara, Katherine Hepburn, and other great actors), as well as quirky and out of circulation movies.  I have in my collection over 1000 movies, and, as this picture shows you, quite a display of them.  Since I took this picture, I have run out of room on these shelves for all my movies, even turning them sideways.  About one-third of them now are DVD’s.

My Living Room

I never thought I could write a science fiction story.  I mean, I write romance.  I write murder-mystery.  I write action-adventure.  I usually write a lot of drama within those genre’s.  In 2011, I started a science fiction novel, I thought it would be a novella, but no, there was more to that story than even I anticipated.  It would plague me for years as I watched the movies, again and again.  Recently I decided to finish it.  I won’t tell you what I named it, or even show you the cover I made back then, because, it would defeat the purpose of this blog, and predispose you to the point of the contest.  After publishing many Prudence MacLeod novels for Shadoe Publishing, it made me realize, that yes, I CAN write a science-fiction novel, with lesbian characters, and I can make the story believable…thank you Pru for the inspiration!

And, that’s what we get to now.  The point of the contest is your HELP in NAMING my science-fiction debut novel.  I have the meat of the story.  I have the two lovers who fall in love in space.  I have the drama.  I even have my synopsis, which reads: While hiking the mountains and deserts of Arizona with her best friend, D.O.G., Ryley Graham hears a whirring noise.  Thinking he has cornered a rattlesnake, she rushes to protect him only to be blinded by a light seemingly coming from nowhere and everywhere simultaneously.

Waking up 510 years later, she is confused by the technology and ‘people’ that surround her.  Skeptical when she is informed she is aboard a spaceship that explores wormholes, it takes a great deal of effort to finally convince her she isn’t in a government-owned facility and isn’t part of some huge experiment or conspiracy.

Adjusting to the odd lifeforms that coexist on the ship, Ryley begins to accept that she can never go back to Earth 2015, and begins to contribute her own unique knowledge and skills to their survival.  As Ryley makes new friends, one of them begins to stand out….

Mercédès is half human and half android.  She is struggling to understand her human side and the odd feelings she is developing for this Earthwoman.

Learning about love, and learning to love will be a huge challenge as Ryley and Mercédès begin to forge a future.  What impact will it have when they discover the real reason Ryley was taken in the first place?

Now, I need YOUR help in NAMING the book!  I have found the artwork that will help me when we are ready to go with this book in say 6-8 weeks, but…I thought I’d ask for help from the readers of fan-fiction who happen to enjoy science-fiction.

The winner of my last contest, Mercedes Lewis (first name only and full inflections of her name) got named in this book, so, I offer not only the possibility of the winner of NAMING this new book a chance to be named in my next book, but, I will send a paperback copy of THIS book ANYWHERE in the world (this world only, all other worlds, galaxies, and planets are excluded from this contest and if you ARE entering from any other worlds, galaxies, and planets please let me know so we can have another conversation, possibly a book deal), and, if you know anything about shipping a book out of this country, that gets expensive…so, put on your thinking caps and come up with a name for my yet, as unnamed, novel and you get to have a signed copy!9eeb1f10132195f3c7ee1e2e24f93f39--gifted-students-first-day-of-school

Something I would like to mention is yes, one of the main characters Mercédès is half human and half android.  No, don’t think Data from The Next Generation or even Seven of Nine from Voyager and certainly not Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Terminator, think Vanessa Williams with machine parts in her beautiful body.  (If you don’t know who Vanessa Williams is, um, what planet are you from?) With THAT in your fertile imaginations, please help me to get a title for my yet as unnamed novel!Screen-Shot-2016-12-23-at-9.02.09-AM
